Experimental studies on the waterflood residual gas saturation and its production by blowdown

This paper reports an experimental study on the waterflood residual gas saturation in two long water wet sandstone cores, having different permeabilities, and the mobilization of this residual gas by reduction of pressure. The waterflood produced the relatively high residual gas saturations of 0 .35 for the higher permeability core and 0.415 for the lower permeability core. During blowdown, it appeared that gas did not immediately become mobile, as would be expected from the use of relative permeability curves determined by fluid injection experiments, but the gas saturation had to increase to a critical value to remobilise the trapped gas. This increase in gas saturation was 0.14 for the higher permeability core and 0.04 for the lower permeability core. The results are relevant to a suggested development scheme for gas condensate reservoirs involving waterflooding followed by blowdown and, also, to schemes for enhanced recovery from gas reservoirs invaded by water.
