The {ital S}-wave ({ital L}=0) and {ital P}-wave ({ital L}=1) phase shifts and the {ital S}-wave and {ital P}-wave elastic and positronium-formation cross sections for positron scattering from hydrogen at energies below the first excitation threshold are calculated in the close-coupling approximation, using the algebraic variational method. Four target-state coupling schemes (H 1{ital s}--Ps 1{ital s}, H 1{ital s}-- H 2{ital s}--Ps 1{ital s}, H 1{ital s}--H 2{ital s}--H 2p--Ps 1{ital s}, and H 1{ital s}--H 2{ital s}--H 2{bar p}--Ps 1{ital s}) have been considered for the calculation. It is found that the H 2{ital {bar p}} target channel significantly affects the {ital S}-wave positronium-formation cross sections.
