Volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are often found to be present in the air, possible compromising health and welfare. In the past, individuals' exposures to this class of chemical compounds have been determined primarily in the occupational setting. Extrapolation from high doses, however, suggests possibility of health effects from low-level, chronic exposures to VOC's and their reaction by-products. As a result, the number of VOC exposure assessments in ambient and indoor settings have increased. Interest in exposures to chemical vapors is in part, a result of the general population's concern for adverse health effects. In conjunction with an ambient air quality monitoring program, the authors have attempted to assess individuals' indoor personal exposures to VOC's in the Kanawha Valley. This paper documents the results of the indoor phase of the exposure assessment study.
