Coal research projects in mining and preparation proliferate as government steps up funding

Coal mining research projects and new mining equipment that will reduce safety hazards and improve production are described. Specifically discussed are (1) methods of detection of impending roof failure, (2) flexible remote drills, (3) roof bolting machines, (4) pre-mining investigations (detection of channel sand), (5) high speed tunneling and boring equipment, (6) automated mining machinery, (7) hydraulic mining, methods of recovering methane before mining, haulage (mobile equipment, conveyers or tracked shuttle cars), improved surface mining equipment, fly ash utilization, and improved coal preparation and dewatering techniques.
