Mineral matter and trace elements in U. S. coals

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7194575
In this study, the chemical nature of the mineral matter in a broad collection of U. S. coals ranging in rank from anthracite through lignite was examined. It was the specific purpose of this study to evaluate and develop the analytical tools necessary to characterize mineral matter. The mineral matter content of some fifty-seven coal samples was studied. Semi-quantitative mineralogical analyses are given for all these coals, with nineteen specific minerals involved. With some exceptions, the major minerals present were kaolinite, mixed layer illite-montmorillonite, quartz, gypsum, and pyrite. In this report, concern was focused primarily on identifying the major minerals composing the mineral material, using x-ray diffraction and infra-red spectroscopy. (auth, from Report Summary)
