Waste heat boiler
This patent describes an apparatus for recovering heat comprising: a housing defining a convection heat transfer chamber having an inlet duct for receiving a flowing stream of heated gas into a lower region of the chamber and an outlet duct for discharging the stream of heated gas from an upper region of the chamber; a generally cylindrical boiler tank disposed adjacent the housing. The boiler tank has its cylindrical axis disposed generally normal to the direction followed by the stream of heated gas flowing through the chamber. The boiler tank includes a water inlet port, a steam discharge port, and a generally rectangular header plate opening formed in a cylindrical sidewall portion of the boiler tank adjacent the housing. A generally rectangular header plate is disposed in sealed engagement with the cylindrical sidewall portion defining the header plate opening. The header plate has heat pipe openings extending therethrough for receiving a plurality of heat pipes; and, heat pipes thermally interconnecting the interior of the boiler tank with the chamber. The heat pipes are inclined at an angle in the range of about 15/sup 0/ to about 35/sup 0/ with respect to the horizontal. The heat pipes include an evaporator section disposed within an intermediate region of the chamber within the flowpath of the stream of heated gas and a condenser section disposed within the interior of the boiler tank.
