Car pools: a bibliography with abstracts

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7193761
Twenty-one abstracts are presented of studies on the feasibility, methodology, and benefits of cooperative automobile use, or car pooling, in urban areas. The principal problems considered are traffic congestion, air pollution, and fuel shortages, along with the associated advantages of mobility improvement, environmental protection, and energy conservation. Several proposals are presented, such as exclusive bus and car pool lanes, community hitchhiking, Government agency preferential treatment of carpoolers, work-destination charts and listings, and computer matching of journey-to-work data. Incentives to gain motorist support, as well as difficulties to be handled regarding work shifts and travel distances are discussed. (auth)
