Standard method for colorimetric determination of uranium in aqueous solutions

A colorimetric method is described for the determination of U in aqueous solutions arising from the processing of irradiated nuclear fuels and from other sources of irradiated U. For best precision, the method is applicable to 50-75 ..mu..g/ml of U, but quantities from 30-750 ..mu..g/ml can be determined. The concentration of U is determined by measuring the absorbance of the U-dibenzoylmethane complex at 415 nm in a hexane solution. To prevent interference from other ions, the U is all oxidized to U(VI) prior to extraction, and the organic extract is scrubbed with acid deficient solutions of Al(NO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ containing titrate, oxalate, EDTA, and ferrous sulfamate. The estimated precision of the single laboratory determinations is 1.7 percent. (BLM)
