Crystal and molecular structure of the trinuclear mixed-valence iron cluster (Fe/sub 3/-. mu. /sub 3/-O(CCl/sub 3/COO)/sub 6/(CH/sub 3/OH)/sub 3/) x 1. 5H/sub 2/O. Fast electron transfer

The structure has been determined by x-ray diffraction analysis at 300/sup 0/K. The carboxylato bridges have the usual geometry. One special feature of the crystal structure, which may be defined as disordering of the outer-sphere water molecules between two positions and which also specifies the placement of both types of CCl/sub 3/ groups in two positions, along with the symmetric equivalence of the (FeO/sub 6/) octahedrons provides a structural basis for the fast transfer of an electron around the system of three centers detected by gamma-resonance spectroscopy.
