This patent describes an improved preloaded lockdown mechanism for a subsea tubing hanger having a running tool latched thereto for use in a subsea wellhead housing having a blowout preventer and a riser above the blowout preventer. It comprises a landing seat and a locking recess within the wellhead housing, a landing shoulder on the tubing hanger, a locking means positioned on the tubing hanger for actuation to engage the locking recess and thereby secure the tubing hanger within the wellhead housing, and a preloading means positioned on the tubing hanger and cooperating with the locking means to preload the locking means and prevent relative movement between the tubing hanger and the wellhead housing.
