  1. Societe Nationale Elf Aquitaine, Pau (France)
With more than 20 years' experience inspecting pipelines with in-line, intelligent inspection devices (intelligent pigs), Societe Nationale Elf Aquitaine (ELF) has gained valuable insights about instruments, their behaviors, special conditions, and inspection results. Since 1971, Elf, along with seven inspection companies, has run intelligent pigs through more than 2,000 km of oil, natural gas, and petroleum product pipelines. Sizes have ranged from 8 to 21 in. OD offshore and on. This first of two articles highlights typical problems evaluated with intelligent pigs and discusses the characteristics of major products used during Elf's inspection experience. The concluding article sets out the company's experience with both magnetic flux leakage (MFL) and ultrasonic (US) equipment. It also presents results obtained with an in-house 10-in. OD test loop.
