Enriching western coals by thermal drying and oil treatment

Lignite and subbituminous fuels in the western states have a much sought-after attribute--a low sulfur content that eases power station compliance with air-quality standards. Offsetting this advantage are high moisture and low Btu values. Commonwealth Edison Co., at its Pekin, Ill. steam-electric station, has taken steps to upgrade western coals. Removal of part of the water and further processing with an oil spray enriches the coal. The feasibility of enriching high-moisture, low-sulfur western coals depends upon the realization of several potential benefits: (1) lower transportation costs, both capital and expense; (2) delivering a coal with improved burning qualities; (3) reduction of operating and maintenance costs of boilers, and (4) an increase in boiler capability.
