Title: Field theoretic investigations on particle physics and cosmology: Scientific and technical report for the period of December 1, 1985 to November 30, 1986

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7185520

The purpose of this paper is to present a new and more detailed treatment of the quantum mechanical behavior of the inflation-driving scalar field. Understanding the time-development of the scalar field and its quantum fluctuations is crucial to the entire ''new inflationary universe'' program. The quantum effects are very important for several reasons. First, they control the length of time for which the scalar field remains near the top of the hill in the potential diagram and hence they determine the duration of the inflationary era. In addition, quantum fluctuations provide the source of density fluctuations which are the seeds for the origin of galaxy formation.
