A growing interest has been noticed lately in the preparation of metal phosphates with specific structural properties for use as catalysts in various organic reactions, for phosphate-type molecular sieves, and as materials for long-term storage of nuclear wastes. The possibility of using BPO[sub 4] for the solid-state preparation of crystalline phosphates of trivalent iron, manganese, and chromium has been investigated. If BPO[sub 4] and Fe[sub 2]O[sub 3] are heated at 900 C, a complete conversion of BPO[sub 4] to the quartz form of FePO[sub 4] results after 9 h. If FeCl[sub 3][center dot]6H[sub 2]O is used instead of Fe[sub 2]O[sub 3], a multiphase crystalline product is obtained in which the dominant phase is the quartz form of FePO[sub 4]. The reaction of BPO[sub 4] with Mn[sub 2]O[sub 3] or MnO[sub 2] at 830 C yields Mn[sub 2]P[sub 2]O[sub 7]; the amount of conversion of BPO[sub 4] to Mn[sub 2]P[sub 2]O[sub 7] after 4 h is 80% (if Mn[sub 2]O[sub 3] is used) and 75% (if MnO[sub 2] is used). However, the method is not successful in the preparation of phosphates of chromium: the reaction of BPO[sub 4] and some chromium compounds yields [alpha]-Cr[sub 2]O[sub 3] as the only chromium-containing product.
