Core-excitation effects in pion double charge exchange

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Differential cross sections for the pion double-charge-exchange reaction /sup 42/Ca(..pi../sup +/, ..pi../sup -/)/sup 42/Ti(g.s.) have been mesured at theta/sub lab/ = 5/sup 0/ at several energies. For T(..pi../sup +/)<200 MeV, sigma(5/sup 0/) are found to be more than an order of magnitude larger than those predicted by conventional double-charge-exchange calculations. It is shown that the observed enhancements can be explained in terms of coherent contributions due to terms proportional to rho/sup 2/(r) in the pion-nucleus potential whose importance is dramatically enhanced in presence of large core-excitation components in /sup 42/Ca(g.s.).
