Comparison of previously published data for the {sup 40}Ca({ital {rvec p}},{ital {rvec p}}{prime}) reactions at {ital E}{sub {ital p}}=319 MeV and {ital E}{sub {ital p}}=800 MeV suggests that the spin-dipole resonance near {omega}=18 MeV is dominated by 1{sup {minus}} transitions. The feature of the reaction at the two energies which allows this {ital J}{sup {pi}} inference is that the transverse isovector nucleon-nucleon {ital t}-matrix amplitude {ital F}{sub 1} is much smaller at 800 than at 319 MeV.
