This patent describes a wellhead for operating a pumping unit polished rod in a pumping well. It comprises: a wellhead housing having a bore for a polished rod and adapted for mounting on a well tubing; seal means in the housing for sealing around a polished rod moving through the bore of the housing; a flapper type valve mounted in the housing for closing the bore upon removal of a polished rod from the bore; and wellhead fluid pressure responsive valve operator means coupled with the valve permitting the valve means to remain open when the wellhead is under fluid pressure.
