It is shown that two-dimensional drift vortices with elliptic cores are unstable to certain short-wavelength three-dimensional perturbations. Circular vortices are stable to those modes. At short wavelengths, the growth rate is independent of the wavelength and, for small ellipticity, it is proportional to the ellipticity.
