The distribution of coal particles by size after crushing can usually be described by the Rosen-Rammler equation. To simplify the analysis it can be assumed (at least when the fuel is charged above the level of the bed) that coal particles with a diameter less than the critical diameter determined by the free-fall velocity are entrained in the flow of flue gases and burn in the space above the bed. In this paper the authors mathematically model this combustion regime under steady-state conditions and determine distribution functions for coal fine particle size.
