Variable speed has long been used in many centrifugal pump and compressor installations to increase operating efficiencies and to provide precise control. High speed has also been exploited through step-up gearing to reduce equipment size and to improve hydraulic performance. The high-speed technology coupled with recent advances in electronic speed control for motors has led to development of integrated pump and motor configurations. When combined with a sealless or canned motor, a totally leak-free installation can be realized. This paper discusses the benefits of this concept.
