The preparation of the d[sup 0] tris(imido) functional groups of niobium and tantalum, [Nb([double bond]NR)[sub 3]][sup [minus]] and [Ta([double bond]NR)[sub 3]][sup [minus]], is reported. [Nb(NEt[sub 2])[sub 2]Cl[sub 3]][sub 2] reacts with excess LiNHmes (mes = 2,4,6-C[sub 6]H[sub 2]Me[sub 3]) in THF to afford [Li(THF)[sub 2]][sub 2]-[Nb([double bond]Nmes)[sub 3](NHmes)]; the tantalum analogue is prepared similarly. Experiments suggest the [Nb([double bond]NR)[sub 3]]- group arises via an intermolecular deprotonation of [Nb([double bond]NR)[sub 2](NHR)[sub 2]][sup [minus]]. [Li(THF)[sub 2]][sub 2][Nb([double bond]Nmes)[sub 3](NHmes)] reacts with [sup n]BuLi to form the substitution product [Li(THF)[sub 2]][sub 2][Nb([double bond]Nmes)[sub 3]([sup n]Bu)], which has been examined crystallographically.
