Catalytically promoted combustion improves FCC (fluid catalytic cracking) operations

The improved oxidation of carbon monoxide to dioxide during cracking catalyst regeneration with combustion promoters developed by Mobil Oil Corp. can be obtained by adding the promoter to the main catalyst circulation system as a solid with an attrition resistance lower than that of the main catalyst. In experimental and commercial runs, this promoter increased gasoline selectivity by 6Vertical Bar3< (because of low carbon levels on the regenerated catalyst), lowered the light-off requirements to below 1200/sup 0/F, was compatible with low-coke-making hydrotreated feedstocks, improved dense-phase burning with elimination of afterburning, provided uniform regenerator temperatures, and reduced the need for good regenerator air distribution. Other methods for improved zeolite regeneration, including Amoco's hardware for improved air distribution and catalyst mixing to give complete conversion of coke to carbon dioxide, the HFZ-20 catalyst developed by the Houdry Division of Air Products and Chemicals and Engelhard Industries for improved thermal and mechanical stability but also showing improved regeneration characteristics, and Mobil's carbon monoxide burning promoter are also discussed.
