This patent describes an apparatus for shielding a radiation emitting component which is immersed in a pool of liquid in a tank with an upper portion of the component extending above the upper surface of the liquid of the pool, the tank being at atmospheric pressure. The apparatus comprising: a vessel having a top end wall, a side wall extending downwardly from the top wall and secured at its upper end in gas tight relation to the top end wall to provide a vessel which is gas tight except at its lower end which is open. The side wall having an inner circumferential size greater than the circumferential size of the upper portion of the component and a height at least equal to the height of the portion for receiving the portion within the vessel and the vessel being of a size receivable within the tank; pumping means connected for fluid flow to the upper end of the interior of the vessel for raising the level of the upper surface of the liquid to at least the upper end of the portion of the component; reinforcing means for preventing collapse of the top end wall and the side wall with evacuation of the vessel; and suspending means.
