An oil shale research operation is described at Horse Draw in the Piceance Creek basin, Colorado, which may enable the basin to produce 50,000 bpd by 1990. The 3-phase program entails 2 yr of experimental mining and prototype testing, followed by a full-size module, and the third phase is a scale-up from module to actual production. The integrated in situ process will produce raw nahcolite, shale oil, fuel gas, alumina, and soda ash in one integrated operation. The oil shale and nahcolite will be mined from the saline zone of the Piceance basin. The thickest, richest oil shale beds are estimated to hold approx. 300 billion bbl of oil, 30 billion tons of nahcolite, and 20 alt fuels + energy sources.
