Fine-structure excitation of carbon by atomic hydrogen impact. [Cross sections, elastic scattering model, rate coefficients]

The cross sections of the fine-structure excitations of carbon by collisions with atomic hydrogen, H(/sup 2/S)+C(/sup 3/P/subJ/) ..-->..H(/sup 2/S)+C(/sup 3/P/subJ/') have been calculated using an elastic scattering model that incorporates an approximate correction for the inelasticity. Maxwellian-averaged cross sections are presented graphically and rate coefficients are tabulated for temperatures less than 1000 K. Analytical fits for the rate coefficients near the thresholds are given. (AIP)
