Treating industrial waste interferences at publicly-owned treatment works

Book ·
OSTI ID:7177782
The EPA-funded studies in this book consider the sources of and contaminants causing interference, the impact of the POTW, and the mitigation techniques available for interference prevention. The intent is not to assess blame, but rather to identify cause and effect relationships and to seek techniques and provide guidance for the mitigation of upsets created by the introduction of abnormal contaminants into POTWs. Part I of this book is a guidance manual which provides POTW operators with guidance on dealing with interferences caused by pollutants from nondomestic sources. Part II of this book contains a review of the technical literature, a telephone survey of all state environmental agencies and identified municipalities, and data on site visits to nearly 30 POTWs that have been successful in their attempts to mitigate interference problems.
