The Warwick Landfill site, which is on the National Priorities List, is located in the southeast portion of Orange County, New York. On-site subsurface soils, surface water and sediments, and groundwater are contaminated with volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds and metals. Off-site private residential drinking water supply wells are contaminated. Local residents have expressed considerable interest in the investigation and future cleanup of the site, and about possible contamination of private drinking water supply wells. Exposure pathways of concern for the site include ingestion of contaminated drinking water, inhalation and direct contact with aerosols and vapors from water used in the household, direct contact with contaminated surface water and sediments, and possible exposure to landfill gas through contaminated ambient air and soil gas intrusion into basements. The site has been evaluated by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's Health Activities Recommendation Panel for appropriate follow-up with respect to health activities.
