Cross sections and asymmetry parameters associated with the process of photodetaching an electron from the Li[sup [minus]] ion via the process [ital h][nu]+Li[sup [minus]][r arrow]Li(2 [sup 2][ital S])+[ital e][sup [minus]]([epsilon][ital p]) have been measured at several photon energies including the region in the vicinity of the opening of the channel: [ital h][nu]+Li[sup [minus]][r arrow]Li(2 [sup 2][ital P])+[ital e][sup [minus]]([epsilon][ital s]). Strong coupling between these channels produces anomalous behavior in the [sup 2][ital S][epsilon][ital p] channel cross section. The measured cross sections are slightly lower than the theoretical predictions, but are in essential agreement within the combined uncertainties in the two values. A search has also been made for a [sup 1][ital P][degree] excited state of Li[sup [minus]] in the vicinity of the 2 [sup 2][ital P] threshold. The saturation characteristics of the photodetachment of Li[sup [minus]] and D[sup [minus]] ions have been investigated over a range of laser powers.
