The preparation of the Dawson-type heteropolyoxoanion P[sub 2]W[sub 15]Nb[sub 3]O[sub 62[sup 9[minus]]] as its water-soluble sodium salt, Na[sub 9]P[sub 2]W[sub 15]Nb[sub 3]O[sub 62][center dot]23H[sub 2]O, is described. The title compound is obtained on up to a 13-g scale as an analytically pure, homogeneous white solid in 61% yield. It was characterized by a complete elemental analysis, TG/DTA, IR spectroscopy, and multinuclear [sup 31]P and [sup 183]W NMR spectroscopy.
