A previously unreported electronic state of the silylidyne radicals, SiH and SiD, was observed by resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy. The spectra of the SiH and SiD radicals appeared over the laser wavelength interval between 426 and 430 nm. The spectra arose from simultaneous two-photon absorption which prepared the F (4p) Rydberg state that lies at 46,700 cm{sup {minus}1}. Absorption of a third laser photon ionized the radicals.
