Criterion Catalyst Co. inherited 40 years of reforming catalyst manufacturing and marketing knowledge from American Cyanamid. When the decision was made to offer a moving bed reforming catalyst, the refining industry was surveyed to determine its desires. In comparison with commercially available catalysts, many of the refiner's desires for improvement involved the properties of the catalyst base or carrier. A base encompassing these improvements was made and demonstrated in the laboratory. This led to commercial usage. With almost 3 years' experience, the commercial operations confirm the expectations for improved surface area retention, better chloride affinity, and low fines generation. This catalyst is currently available with 2 different platinum metal loadings.
