The recently established Renewable Energy Office at Sandia National Laboratories, which operates as a team of technical peolpe, is the outgrowth of more than two decades of work in renewable energy technologies at this national laboratory. Much of Sandia's efforts in the past have been in basic research. This research has yielded practical applications of renewable energy systems for diverse needs, from bulk power to stand-alone systems for remote areas. The Renewable Energy team is a cross-technology group of engineers with primary focus on solar thermal, photovoltaic (PV), wind, and geothermal systems. Its team leader is Paul Klimas, who has worked for many years in both the wind and solar thermal departments. The team facilitates partnerships with industry, arranging joint ventures, cooperative research and development agreements, cost-shared contracts, and design assistance activities.
