Laboratory report: NREL works with industry and state governments to advance solar heat technologies
Today, solar heat - specifically, the solar-derived heat used in industrial, commercial, and government applications - is reliable and economically competitive in a number of niche markets. Solar process heat systems supply industry, private businesses, and government facilities (such as schools and state hospitals) with hot water and hot air by means of several different technologies. These versatile, modular solar heat technologies can be custom-designed to match the user's process heat needs. A the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sandia National Laboratories, researchers and engineers working in the Solar Process Heat Program are dedicated to increasing the use of solar heat technologies in industry, business, and government. NREL and Sandia assist both potential users and solar equipment manufacturers with engineering, educational, analytical, and cost-sharing services that are designed to advance the progress of solar heat technologies in the marketplace. One of the goals of the Solar Process Heat Program is to help specific businesses and government entities determine, through formal engineering studies, whether a solar heat technology can be successfully applied to their operations. These program-funded studies bring together a solar heat company and a potential user, who work together to determine whether a solar system is a technically and economically feasible option for meeting the user's process heat needs.
