Thermodesorption has been used in studying the reactivity, with acetylene, of chemisorbed hydrogen on Ir black. The hydrogen species that interact with acetylene are weakly bound forms with T /SUB des/ = 183-298/sup 0/K (n =1) and 298-423/sup 0/K (n = 2). The primary direction of the process is hydrogenation to form ethane. Part of the acetylene that has entered into interaction with the hydrogencovered Ir surface is broken down destructively, releasing hydrogen.
