Rate constant for the O(/sup 3/P) + CH/sub 4/. -->. OH + CH/sub 3/ reaction obtained by the flash photolysis-shock tube technique over the temperature range 763 less than or equal to T less than or equal to 1755 K
The rate constant for the reaction of O(/sup 3/P) with methane was measured over the temperature range 763 less than or equal to T less than or equal to 1755 K by the flash photolysis-shock tube technique. The results, k (cm/sup 3/ molecule /sup -1/s/sup -1/) = 9.2 x 10/sup -19/T/sup 2.40/ exp(-2838/T), agree with those of previous workers who employed different experimental methods and thus endorses the flash photolysis-shock tube technique as an important method for measuring rate constants in the temperature range approx. 800 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 2000 K. A recommended rate expression for the reaction of O(/sup 3/P) with CH/sub 4/, k(cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/s/sup -1/) = 1.15 x 10/sup -15/T/sup 1.56/ exp(-4270/T) over the temperature range 400 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 2250 K, was derived from an evaluation of the combined results of the present study and those of selected previous investigations.
