This month's data feature recaps nuclear generated electricity by geographic area in 1992. Included for the first time are assessments of the nuclear industries in Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Nuclear generated electricity produced in 1992 exceeded that of the previous year only marginally-by 0.9%. A total of 30 countries had commercially operating nuclear power stations in 1992, compared with 26 in 1991. The increase was caused by the splitting of the former USSR into independent states, four of which have nuclear facilities, and to the break-up of Czechslovakia into two countries, each of which has nuclear generating power. In 1993, two new nuclear facilities began operations in Canada, adding 1,762 MWe of capacity to Canadian nuclear capability. Elsewhere, other new facilities began operating in India and Japan. Worldwide, 70 reactors are at some stage of development, but it is unlikely that all will be completed.
