The relative complex-forming powers (electron-acceptor powers) of cations of alkaline-earth metals ..cap alpha../sub ac/(i) were determined from their influences on the half-wave reduction potentials of 1,2-naphthoquinone ..delta..E/sub 1/2/(HX, i) in organic solvents. For this the authors made use of the linear relation between ..delta..E/sub 1/2/(HX, i) and the donor numbers of the solvents. The relative complex-forming powers (electron-acceptor powers) of cations of alkaline-earth metals diminish with increase in the atomic number of the element in the periodic system. Assessments were made of the energies of formation of ion pairs with the radical anion of 1,2-naphthoquinone R/sup .-/ . . .M/sup 2 +/ in a noncomplexating solvent, which conform to the same relation. Hence, the nature of the donor does not influence the character of the change in the complex-formation properties of these cations in the given group of the periodic system.
