ANS 16.1 is a leaching test developed as a standard method to measure the ability of solidified, monolithic wastes to impede the release of contaminates when in contact with water. The leachability index is an expression of the results of that test. This paper reports on the results of experiments to examine the effect of two contaminant immobilization mechanisms on the leachability index. ANS 16.1 theory is presented and discussed. Four batches of solidified waste were prepared, each with two parts of fly ash and one part of cement to one part of waste, and four different amounts of chromium and phenol. Results and discussion of the data is presented.
