The transfer of negative pions from pionic hydrogen to deuterium has been investigated in gas mixtures of H{sub 2} and D{sub 2} as a function of the D{sub 2} concentration ({ital C}). The concentration dependence of the transfer rate was fitted using a phenomenological model with two parameters. For {ital C}{r arrow}{infinity} (32{plus minus}3)% of the pions undergo transfer. The fitted parameters reflect the ratio of pion capture to pion transfer in collisions of pionic hydrogen with protons or deuterons. No pressure dependence for pion transfer was found.
