An evaluation is made of the development status of the Ni-base 718 superalloy, in the areas of clean-melt practices, low-cycle fatigue resistance, thermomechanical processing, and alloy optimization. Intergranular cracking remains the weakest link in 718 performance; high crack-growth resistance at 650 C is highly desirable. A homogenization treatment with imposed heating and cooling rates has been shown to control the transformation characteristics of 718. There are strong indications that 718 can be improved through precipitate strengthening. 11 refs.
