The development of a congener specific method that can provide detailed information on the many congeners present in the environment been a goal of many environmental chemists. However, after data acquisition and quantitation, a most important step remains, data must be examined for quality control and information content. The authors have approached the problem of data reduction and interpretation from a chemometric perspective. The analysis and interpretation of PCB residues in Forsters terns from two locations in Wisconsin provide a good example of using a chemometrics approach to data analysis by pattern recognition.
