Hoyt C. Hottel: MIT's combustion and solar energy pioneer

This article describes the life of Hoyt C. Hottel. It explains his interest in heat transfer problems, fuel and gas engineering, and fire warfare research. Hottel is also a pioneer in the study of solar energy utilization. This article explains how he became interested in this field and how he built the first solar energy house in 1939. The article also explains his views on the potential of solar energy and a national energy policy. He believes a national energy policy should focus on coal and nuclear energy as its core. Hottel has published more than 120 articles, five books and 20 patents.
