Title: Characterization of interactions and interfacial properties of wood/polyurethane composites

Miscellaneous ·
OSTI ID:7162244

Polyurethane was formulated with a ratio of short chain polyol (E-9157): long chain polyol (E-7057): crosslinker (Poly-G X79530) = 90:5:5 with a 110 isocyanate index. Aspen and sugar maple thermomechanically pulped (TMP) fibers and isolated {alpha}-cellulose, xylan, and lignin from these TNMP fibers were added into polyurethane at 5% and 13% levels (oven dry weight basis on total weight of the polyurethane mixture) to formulate wood component/polyurethane composites. Available hydroxyl contents of the wood fibers and the isolated wood components were first evaluated by determination of the NCO/OH ratio. The NCO/OH ratios were measured by titration, acetylation, and mechanical tests. The interfacial studies indicated that interactions did occur between xylan, lignin, or wood, and very good interfaces were achieved between TMP fiber, lignin, or xylan and the polyurethane matrix, respectively. Very little interaction and poor interfaces were found between {alpha}-cellulose and polyurethane matrix.
