The sensitization behavior of 308 duplex stainless steel welds with lathy ferrite

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7161497
The sensitization behavior of 5 autogenous T.I.G. welds with lathy ferrite microstructure was investigated by isothermally heat treating samples for various lengths of time at 550C and 600C and testing for intergranular corrosion resistance in ASTM-A262E. The welds were found to behave similarly to other welds of similar composition but which had interdendritic or vermicular ferrite. Considering the very large amounts of austenite-ferrite interfacial area present in the lathy ferrite welds, theoretical analysis predicted that such welds should be immune to sensitization. Although the welds were found to be highly resistant to sensitization, they were not immune. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.
