This review covers the literature for the approximate period December 1985 through December 1987 with emphasis on progress in the development of theory, methodology, and applications in quantitative electroanalytical chemistry under conditions of a net current flow. Of particular interest are phenomena that exhibit dynamic response and/or that are capable of monitoring real-time variations in chemical activity. Cited also is literature describing auxiliary techniques for characterization of electrode surfaces and associated electrochemical phenomena. As was the case at the time of the previous review, the areas of highest activity in this review period continued to be related to developments in microelectrodes, chemically modified electrodes, and bioelectrochemical sensors. The specific topics that form the outline of this review were chosen to provide comprehensive but efficient coverage of the pertinent literature. No great effort was made to avoid occasional overlap of citations within related topics.
