Preparation, structure, and ion-exchange properties of Na/sub 4/Ti/sub 9/O/sub 20/ x xH/sub 2/O

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)

A sodium titanate, Na/sub 4/Ti/sub 9/O/sub 14/ x xH/sub 2/O, was synthesized at low temperatures (90-280/sup 0/C)by a reaction of either anatase of titanium isopropoxide with NaOH. Na/sub 4/Ti/sub 9/O/sub 20/ x xH/sub 2/O is a layered compound with an interlayer distance of 6.9 A in the anhydrous form, approx. 8.6 A in the metastable semihydrous form, and 10.0 A in the fully hydrated form. Regardless of its hydration state, this sodium titanate has an ion-exchange capacity of 4.74 meq/g of Na/sub 4/Ti/sub 9/O/sub 20/, and all the Na/sup +/ ions are exchangeable. When heated to 700/sup 0/C, Na/sub 4/Ti/sub 9/O/sub 20/ x xH/sub 2/O decomposes to a mixture of Na/sub 2/Ti/sub 3/O/sub 7/ and Na/sub 2/Ti/sub 6/O/sub 13/.
