Investigation of the high density multiwire proportional chamber as a detector for neutral particles

This paper describes a position-sensitive multiwire proportional chamber with effective area of 200 x 200 mm/sup 2/. The chamber combining with a multilayer lead ..gamma..-ray converter forms a high density multiwire proportional chamber ..gamma..-ray detector. The lead converter is made in a uniformly arranged matrix of 0.9 mm diameter holes on a 1.1 mm pitch. For 511-keV photons the detection efficiency is 5.6%, and the spatial resolution is 1 mm. The detector has been used in the investigation of a positron camera, and it also offers possibilities of x-ray detection.
