Title: USSR becomes the World's leading oil producer

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)

A combination of increasing production from frontier areas of the USSR, declining output in the United States, and surplus supply in the Middle East has moved the Soviets into the position of the leading crude oil producer of the world. The continuing decline of U.S. production has moved it into third place behind Saudi Arabia and Russia in terms of productive capacity. In 1974, the USSR reported an average production of 9.08 million bpd of crude oil, 150,000 bpd of condensate, and 25.242 bcfgd. Crude and condensate production was 7 percent above the 1973 level. In 1974, the USSR became a net exporter of gas with total deliveries to European communist countries and to Austria, West Germany, Finland, and Italy exceeding imports from Iran and Afghanistan by about 200 MMcfd, as compared with a 4.5 bcfd deficit in 1973. Most 1974 marine activity was concentrated in the Caspian Sea. Much information on all drilling activities in the USSR is furnished with a very detailed map of drilling activities. The drilling activities in Rumania, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, East Germany, and Albania are summarized. (MCW)
