Effect of driveway traffic on saturation flow rates at signalized intersections

Traffic making right turns into and out of a driveway on an approach to a signalized intersection may reduce the saturation flow rate on the approach by interfering with the normal queue discharge in the curb land. Existing guidelines for the location and design of driveways on intersection approaches do not, however, consider the potential effects of driveway location and design of saturation flow rates, nor does the highway capacity manual account for these effects. The objective of the study reported here was to investigate the effect of driveway traffic on saturation flow rates on signalized intersection approaches and determine the need for further study. This study was limited to the observation of the effect of driveway traffic making right turns into and out of driveways. Left-turn driveway movements were not studied.
