Until the mid-1970s, the value of Egyptian oil imports outstripped that of its petroleum exports. Today Egypt has gained a strategic significance in global oil trade, with greater output in both production and exporting than several members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. This book presents an overview of Egypt's energy sector, exploring its organization structure, evaluating its domestic resources, and weighing the production levels of oil, natural gas, coal, shale, and solar, hydro, and nuclear power, as well as other renewable sources of energy. Energy utilization and demand, pricing issues, and the sector's contribution to the Egyptian economy are also addressed, with special attention given to the critical role of rising oil and gas output in generating foreign exchange to finance overall economic development.
